Hitting rock bottom
We recently hosted a team of Geophysicists from the University of Oxford and the University of Bristol who were looking to deploy new seismic devices in the mine. A team consisting of ICL rock engineers and our Boulby Underground Lab staff, George and Beth, took the visiting seismology team 1.1km underground to help them perform their geological survey.
The set up involved 48 geophones drilled into the salt layer, the sensitivities of which were tested with numerous hammer hits to the floor (pictured). The results of these scoping tests will lay the foundations for a second set of tests to characterise the halites far beneath the salt layer.
